  1. 1. Joshua James, The New Love Song
This is an anti-traditional love song, I really like that about it. It’s a feel good song, but also thoughtful.

    2. Atmosphere, The Things That Hate Us
Shout out to the hometown! I grew up listening to Atmosphere, and the songs have really stood the test of time for me. I picked this one because we do love the things that hate us, and I’ve been trying to make positive changes in my life over the last year or so, and it’s hard because all the fun stuff is pretty bad for you.

    3. Rilo Kiley, Portions for Foxes
Great line: “There’s blood in my mouth ‘cause I’ve been biting my tongue all week.” Sometimes it feels really good to do something that you KNOW is going to end badly for you, that’s what this song is about for me.

    4. The Cure, Maybe Someday
I love the contradiction you can hear in this song, wanting to live in the past or the future, but being stuck in the present, the whole song is so tortured and awesome.

    5. Ani Difranco, Swim
This song makes me think about all the toxic relationships I’ve had in my life, and how when you learn to get away from all that and be at peace with yourself.

    6. Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers, American Girl
I think this is a pretty self-explanatory choice. I can’t help but thinking there’s a little more to life somewhere else, that’s all. And I used to sing this at the top of my lungs with a bunch of other drunk, obnoxious American girls walking back to our hostel in Paris when I was studying abroad in college. Ahh, the memories.

    7. Counting Crows, Recovering the Satellites (Live)
The Counting Crows have been my favorite band forever and ever. Adam Duritz has a great voice, something about his tone just draws me in, and the lyrics are always complicated and deep. P.S. Adam, if you ever break up with the chick from Phantom of the Opera, I’m here for you, just FYI.

    8. Regina Spektor, On the Radio
This is my ringtone. When I came home from living in Bretagne, I was seriously depressed about it, I wasn’t ready to leave when I did. This is one of the songs that got me through. I like how she breaks down life, laying it out there like “This is how it works.”

    9. Tete, Fils de Cham
Tete is very musically interesting. I went on a roadtrip once with only this CD and a Dido CD, and most of the time we listened to this one. The name of the CD in English translates roughly to “The Rite of the Lemmings and Other Tales From the Edge,” and everything this guy says is weird and wonderful like that. The title of this song translates to “Son of the Shaman” like as in witch doctor.

  2. 10. The Hush Sound, Break the Sky
This is an anthem of independence, also a great sing along song for the car. “Fear will hold you back if you believe in that” is really gratifying lyric to sing at the top of your lungs. The Hush Sound is a fun band, I went to one of their shows with Fisch and Allegedly Dave a few years back and fell in love with them.

    11. Cat Empire, The Lost Song
This song for me is a look at how we’re constantly evolving and going through our different “lives." Just listen for that tambourine solo, it’ll really blow your mind.

    12. Iron & Wine, Someday the Waves
Everything this band touches is pretty much made of gold. I chose this song because lots of times I have “a childish wish for snow.”

    13. Keren Ann, La Corde et Les Chaussons
The title is “The Rope and the Slippers” and it’s got a really cool sound with a mixture of electronic music and violins.

    14. Charles Aznavour, Emmenez-moi
The last French song, promise. It’s about wanting to be somewhere else, and it’s a great old song. It makes me want to do a waltz.

    15. Dave Matthews Band, Crush
This is a song that meant a lot to me at one point in my life, and it still gets me every time I hear it.

    16. Company of Thieves, Oscar Wilde
“Live like it’s the style,” how could you not love a song with that line?

    17. Glen Hansard & Marketa Irglova, The Swell Season
Listen to those violins! Violins are a big seller for me, I played for 8 years.

    18. Foxy Shazam, Bye Bye Symphony
This song is so BIG. I like the full orchestra in the background combined with the angsty feel of the vocals. “There are no sad songs left to write."son
